Mayan Calendar & 2012

by Mariela Maya

The Mayans were passionate for measuring time, they were astronomers and mathematicians and they lived in harmony with Nature’s cycles. Although we hear about the Mayan Calendar as if we were talking only about one calendar, the Mayan used 17 calendars simultaneously!

The year 2012 is related to the Long Count Calendar, calendar that contains the cycle of 5.125 years (13 Baktuns of 394.25 years each). This year is very important, not only because it represents the end of the Long Count (which started in 3,113 b.C.), but also because it coincides with several astronomical events, which happen every 26,000 years and fall this time on the Winter Solstice in the North Hemisphere (December 21st, 2012). This greater cycle refers to five Long Count cycles calculated based on 5,200 tuns x 5 (Tun = 360 days or 18 winals of 20 days each).

It’s important to clarify that 2012 is not the end of the world! It is simply the end of a cycle, to give birth to a new one to come. It is unfortunate to see how the media, including Hollywood, are constantly bombarding us with apocalyptical messages, which create fear, confusion and distraction in regards to what is really happening. We are living very special moments, the awakening of consciousness, new opportunities for everybody to improve our quality of life and the environment in which we live in. Instead of fearing change, we should be thankful to have the blessing of being part of this important shift in Humanity’s history.

More and more people feel disoriented, confused, social chaos surrounds us, natural disasters, environmental destruction, regional economies and the global financial systems collapse, everything is accelerating and it seems that “time is never enough”.

This period of transition cannot be understood from the logic, but we have to let ourselves flow, feeling the energies, experiencing them and trusting in the process. We have now the opportunity to choose what we want and be the architects of our own lives. In our journey towards Enlightenment, we have the freewill to decide step-by-step the path to follow, through an active role and individual responsibility, while we are conscious of our interconnection with others and the environment. What we do affects the whole….

It is up to us to be alert to the signals, to be brave to let go and grow!

And, above everything, listen to our own inner voice and follow our instincts, without being influenced by the messages we get from the outside…

In Lak’esh means “I am another yourself!”, a Mayan greeting that recognizes the Divine in each living Being. It’s a message of Unity that reminds us that, when we give, we are also receiving. In this way, the Mayan honored and respected each other, reinforcing the belief that we are all interconnected: what we do to others and to our environment will also affect ourselves in the end…
